Rostock cooling tower

The coal-fired power plant on the eastern outskirts of the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which has been in operation for nearly 30 years, faced the challenge of renovating its cooling tower supports, which were heavily stressed. Demolishing and rebuilding these supports would not have been a cost-effective option due to the limited lifespan of the power plant and other factors.

Corrosion protection solution

The chosen solution for this challenge was the MC-KKS/B system. This cathodic corrosion protection system halts the progression of corrosion, providing an economical repair solution. In addition to this system, thermal zinc spray coating, accompanied by certified surface protection system build-ups, was applied to ensure long-lasting corrosion protection.

The implementation proved to be demanding: the entire executing workforce was trained and certified in cathodic corrosion protection. An integrated monitoring system also allows for continuous monitoring of corrosion protection. The proximity to the Baltic Sea, specific environmental conditions, and high safety standards on the power plant site added additional complexity to the renovation. Despite these challenges, the corrosion protection was successfully and efficiently carried out.

The result of these comprehensive renovation works is an effective, sustainable, and long-lasting corrosion protection, supported by innovative technology and environmentally friendly approaches. The power plant can now continue to operate efficiently, with minimized environmental impacts and a long-term protection solution for its infrastructure.

The proven cathodic corrosion protection effect achieved through the use of GZ-850/851 has been evident since its commissioning in 2009. In a C3 environment, this solution has proven to be optimal for the implementation process and long-lasting protection against rust. The architecturally outstanding structure remains unblemished in its external appearance while being durably protected, contributing to the long-term preservation of this significant public transportation hub.
