How are customer-specific zinc products developed at GRILLO?
Gehrke: The development takes place in the form of projects, where the type, duration, and scope of the development work are defined. In close collaboration with our customers, we discuss and solidify the technical requirements. We then produce the respective zinc products through production trials.
What should be considered in the development of zinc products for various application areas?
Suchard: To develop customer-specific zinc products optimally, in-depth knowledge of the different application areas is essential. When it comes to developing zinc products for batteries, detailed knowledge of various battery types and battery systems is also crucial.
What are the steps in the development process?
Gehrke & Suchard: The project workflow includes planning, product or process development, and the analysis and evaluation of zinc products. Together with our customers, we define specifications and expected properties of the zinc products. This is followed by production trials, chemical and physical analyses in the laboratory. The results are evaluated internally and with the customer, and after coordination with the customer, sampling and, if necessary, further adjustments are made.
Why is R&D so important for the zinc products business?
Gehrke: Without expertise in zinc-based battery systems and other applications for zinc products, the development of innovative zinc products and their successful market introduction is not possible.
What are the benefits to the customer of this high research effort?
Dr. Melzer: The high research effort enables our customers to find the optimal solution for their products and reduce their own development effort.
GRILLO has state-of-the-art production facilities in Duisburg and Goslar. What distinguishes them?
Dr. Melzer: Our location in Goslar consolidates our technical expertise for the development and production of zinc powder and zinc oxide. There, we have a well-equipped chemical laboratory, a gasification laboratory, and the necessary powder characterization laboratory equipment. At the company headquarters in Duisburg, we have the competence center for the development and production of wire and foil, as well as chemical development. Equipped with modern testing and analysis laboratories. Both locations, with their central location and excellent infrastructure, enable us to ship our zinc products worldwide.
To what extent do you utilize your own research departments for sponsored research projects?
Gehrke: The development of zinc accumulators is a strategically important future market for the zinc battery industry and for ourselves. Therefore, we collaborate closely with national and international universities and research institutions, including sponsored research projects in cooperation with industry and university partners.
