Wind farm in Vindeby
The Vindeby offshore wind park, located off the coast of the town of Vindeby on the Danish island of Lolland, was the world’s first of its kind and began operation in 1991. After more than 25 years of active service, the wind park was decommissioned in 2017.
Corrosion protection for offshore wind turbines
After a thorough and comprehensive evaluation over a long period of time, thermal spraying, including the high-quality GRILLO zinc-aluminum wire G-Z850/851, was finally included in the specific requirements for the corrosion protection of wind turbine towers. This extended evaluation phase emphasizes the commitment invested in finding the optimal solution to ensure both the quality of the process and the flawless protection of the wind turbine towers. In this respect, the GRILLO wire G-Z850/851 was recognized as the absolutely essential solution. A 120 µm protective layer of zinc-aluminum, followed by two epoxy layers and a polyurethane layer, now offers comprehensive protection that is not only functional, but also takes into account the aesthetic design of the wind turbine towers.
Proven corrosion protection since the 1990s
Originally designed for a lifespan of 20 years, the corrosion protection with GRILLO Zinc-Aluminium wire G-Z850/851 exceeded expectations despite the heavy exposure to salty sea air. The wind park could be operated for almost six additional years and is considered a milestone in the history of wind energy. The insights gained from this project influenced the construction and operation of numerous other offshore wind parks worldwide, strengthening GRILLO’s expertise in the field of corrosion protection for renewable energy.
