Guillemins train station

After an international competition, Guillemins train station was opened in its current form in September 2009 following extensive remodeling and reconstruction work. The station is located just outside the city centre in the Guillemins district and was redesigned under the supervision of the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava.

Substantial financial resources amounting to 312 million euros were invested in this impressive construction project. The most distinctive architectural feature of the station is the 200-meter-long, undulating arch-shaped roof, reminiscent of a ski jump, which soars up to 40 meters above the modernized track bed. In total, 10,000 tonnes of steel were used in the construction of this imposing roof.

Corrosion protection solution

To ensure the long-term preservation and protection of the steel structure, careful consideration was given to corrosion protection. After a thorough examination and consultation with the Fédération des Metalliseurs in Belgium, it was decided to implement corrosion protection for the entire steel structure using G-Z850/851, GRILLO’s Zinc-Aluminium wire. This protection consists of a 100 µm thick Zinc-Aluminium layer, followed by two epoxy coats and two polyurethane coats, which not only provide effective protection but also preserve the aesthetic design of the station. The proven cathodic corrosion protection effect achieved through the use of G-Z850/851 has been evident since its commissioning in 2009. In a C3 environment, this solution has proven to be optimal for the implementation process and long-lasting protection against rust. The architecturally outstanding structure remains unblemished in its external appearance while being durably protected, contributing to the long-term preservation of this significant public transportation hub.
