Zinc battery workshop in West Virginia: The future of zinc in the energy transition
This week, our colleague Christoph Müller was on the road again to expand the role of zinc in the energy transition. The zinc battery workshop in West Virginia focused on zinc and batteries – from zinc extraction to the supply chain to the finished battery material and the challenges and opportunities that will arise in the future. GRILLO also made its contribution with the presentation “Understanding the Zinc Metal Market”. We presented our products and explained how the adaptation of zinc powders and foils to the specific requirements of battery developers could lead to a better result.
The workshop began with an impressive opening in which the importance of zinc in the energy transition was emphasized. Various representatives called for cooperation between suppliers and developers of zinc batteries in order to accelerate commercialization. The workshop also provided a platform for discussing problems in the zinc battery supply chain. Industry representatives discussed data and resource gaps. The interaction between industry and the federal government was also in focus, with both sides discussing ways to ensure supply chain security and drive the development of zinc batteries.
Special thanks to Professor Xingbo Liu from West Virginia University, the Director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Grid Storage Launchpad Vincent Sprenkle, Martin van Leeuwen from the International Zinc Association and Dr. Josef Daniel-Ivad from ZBI for organizing the workshop.
