A successful start to the ZACK project: developing a sustainable zinc-ion battery technology

The ZACK collaborative research project got under way in early July with a successful kick-off meeting. Funded under the 8th Energy Research Programme by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy using funds from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF), the project runs for three years until June 2029.

The project aims to develop a zinc-ion battery technology using water-based acidic electrolytes derived from sustainable raw materials, intended to provide an economical and sustainable long-term alternative to lithium-ion batteries in the field of stationary energy storage.

As consortium leader, GRILLO Zinc Powder GmbH coordinates the work of the project network and is responsible for developing innovative anode materials. Together with the project partners, new solutions are being explored across the entire battery cell – from electrode materials, electrolytes and separators through to cell development and model-based assessment.

The consortium comprises:

• GRILLO Zinc Powder GmbH (coordinator) – anode development
• Freudenberg Performance Materials GmbH & Co. KG – separator design and interface stabilisation
• Dr. Hesse GmbH & Cie. KG – development of electrolytes and additives
• Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE – cell development and cost analysis
• Institute for Photovoltaics, University of Stuttgart – model-based assessment and electrode stabilisation
• DECHEMA Research Institute – cathode active materials and electrode development

The project is further supported by associated partners acp systems AG and Helmut Hechinger GmbH & Co. KG, particularly on questions relating to industrial production planning and scaling.

The project launch offered all those involved an excellent opportunity to discuss the technical work packages, define shared objectives and lay the foundations for successful collaboration.

We would like to thank all project partners for the constructive exchange and look forward to jointly contributing to the development of sustainable, safe and resource-efficient energy storage technologies.
