Continuation of investigations on the Willy-Brandt-Ring: in-depth short-term and long-term pumping tests started

Building on the pumping tests carried out at Willy-Brandt-Ring in April 2025, GRILLO is continuing its investigations into the groundwater system with extended short-term and long-term pumping tests. The aim of the current measures is to further substantiate the previous findings and clarify additional important issues for the planning of a sustainable solution.

The new series of tests will focus in particular on determining the geohydraulic properties of the subsoil more precisely. Differentiated short-term pumping tests are initially used to obtain additional data on the permeability and flow behavior of the groundwater. These serve as the basis for the subsequent long-term pumping test, in which water is continuously pumped and comprehensively analyzed over a longer period of time.

Another central component of the investigations is the assessment of ochre formation dynamics. This involves investigating the extent and speed at which precipitation of iron compounds can occur in the wells. The results provide important information for the subsequent design of the systems as well as for the necessary measures for regular well regeneration in order to ensure long-term reliable operation.

At the same time, the development of the water quality is examined in detail. In addition to the analyses already carried out, water samples will be taken again and examined in the laboratory. This will make it easier to assess how the quality of the groundwater could change under the conditions of long-term operation.

The work continues to be carried out in close consultation with independent experts and in compliance with all applicable environmental and safety standards. The data obtained is continuously evaluated and forms an essential basis for the planning of a possible well system.

The extended investigations are the next important step in obtaining a more accurate picture of the underground conditions. The conditions will be created to keep contaminated groundwater on the site in a targeted and permanent manner in future.

GRILLO will continue to provide transparent information on the progress of the measures. The results of the current investigations will be incorporated into further planning and are crucial for the development of a sustainable long-term solution to protect the environment and groundwater.
